Opal

Opal is my first character I've ever created and 3D modeled. Opal is inspired by the gemstone Opal. I used the gemstone as my inspiration, and it's the core energy and heart for my robot.

I started creating him by sketching out a design. While drawing out ideas of Opal's design, I thought about giving Opal one leg intead of 2. The reason is to give a backstory for him. Opal lost his leg due to malfunction in the factory. He was still functioning without it, and the budget to get him a new one is higher than his creator expected. After much thought, I decided to scrap the idea.

After sketching him, I imported the drawing in Maya and 3D modeled it from scratch. After 3D modeling it, I experimented the hypershade and used color theory to figure out what materials and colors work well together.

To finalize his design, I decided to give him facial expression. I went for neutral, happy, sad, and angry expressions for him to express.
